How We Got Started

To determine whether or not the community-based six to eight week healthy lifestyle class with which you plan to network meets criterion for being an NP Outreach Program, ask yourself, “Does it address the needs identified in Healthy People 2010?”

What Are the Leading Health Indicators?

The Leading Health Indicators will be used to measure the health of the Nation over the next 10 years. Each of the 10 Leading Health Indicators has one or more objectives from Healthy People 2010 associated with it. As a group, the Leading Health Indicators reflect the major health concerns in the United States at the beginning of the 21st century. The Leading Health Indicators were selected on the basis of their ability to motivate action, the availability of data to measure progress, and their importance as public health issues.

The Leading Health Indicators are:

  • Physical Activity
  • Overweight and Obesity
  • Tobacco Use
  • Substance Abuse
  • Responsible Sexual Behavior
  • Mental Health
  • Injury and Violence
  • Environmental Quality
  • Immunization
  • Access to Health Care

If the community-based six to eight week healthy lifestyle class with which you plan to network meets criterion for being an NP Outreach Program, use the links on the left to better understand our presentation methods.

Presentation Methods

  • Nurse Practitioners network with community recreational centers, senior centers, schools, hospitals, and/or health clubs in their primary care practice region to provide motivational programs linked to existing healthy lifestyle classes all of which have a minimum of six weeks duration. Examples of health series include: Yoga, aerobics, women’s self-defense, cooking for health, postpartum exercise, working out with children, jazzercising for health, surviving breast cancer, safe dating and intimacy, osteoporosis prevention, smoking cessation.
  • Curriculum, data collection, and course materials are provided by the NP Outreach team; but you may choose to use your own curriculum.
  • Each participant receives a gift bag of healthy products upon enrolling in a center-based healthy lifestyle series of their choice at your introductory health lecture. Enrollment fees are determined by and paid directly to the community facility. Enrollees are not charged for attending your health lecture, nor for the gift bag. If your health promotion talk is linked to a group medical visit, current standards for care, documentation, and billing are your responsibility.
  • Your program is publicized through various media such as: community center mailings; promotional posters, local radio media and newspapers. The NP Outreach team will assist you in this process.
  • The NP Outreach staff functions as a buffer between marketers and the Nurse Practitioners, to protect the privacy of you and your patients.
  • Brief entry and exit data questionnaires may be completed by participants at the discretion of Nurse Practitioners.

Presentation Format

  • Head to toe presentation format paralleling sequence of a primary care provider’s complete physical exam, while highlighting health problems unique to the population your are addressing.
  • Participants are invited to interrupt with any questions they may have and frequently use these lectures as opportunities to clarify questions not raised in their primary care visits. Product safety issues are frequently raised & addressed.
  • Topics are presented in a user-friendly, often humorous, way. Humor works well to engage your audience. Comfort with your subject matter is imperative.
  • Specific examples of potential health problems are described and their treatment and prevention explored clearly in this comfortable non-threatening setting.
  • Throughout the lectures any prevention and treatment products identified must have their specific use explained. Presenters use gift bag items as visual demos. No product should ever be recommended over any other product.
  • Risks and benefits of each health program series are discussed prior to enrollment. Individual questions will be addressed by the Nurse Practitioner in conjunction with the series leader at the conclusion of your lecture, during enrollment and gift bag distribution.
  • Dealing with any enrollment fees are solely the responsibility of the facility in which the series is offered, not the Nurse Practitioner Presenter.
  • Presenters do not charge the facilities for their services, nor do the facilities charge the presenters or their medical group.

Additional Methods

If you are a nurse practitioner who is seeking to learn more about our methods, see the To be a Presenter page.

Once you have applied to join our team, you will be mailed additional materials. Our curriculum is only intended for use by members of the NP Outreach Nurse Practitioner Presentation Team. Because presentation attendees often ask questions for which only a Nurse Practitioner’s scope of practice can provide answers, applications are only accepted from licensed Certified Nurse Practitioners.

Make sure that the address you furnish is where you wish to receive training materials, presentation set up information, and NP Outreach curriculum information. There is never a charge to you for the shipping of any training or educational materials.
